No matter what, everyone will ask WIIFM “What’s In It For Me?” It is a question we start asking when we are little and we continue to ask until we die!

It’s up to us as training and development, or learning professionals, to answer the call for our learners. Tell them “What’s In It For Them!”

This video was edited in Premiere Pro and subtitled using the free version of Kapwing.

Hi! I’m Chris Karel from the Learning Carton! I’m on a mission to help YOU make better learning videos. And I’m here to help you use those videos to create better learning experiences.

What is WIIFM?

(phone ringing)
CHRIS
Hello? Whiff ‘em?

BOB STOPKINS
Whiff ‘em?

BOO
(sniffing) Whiff ‘em?

BOB STOPKINS
Yes! WIIFM!

Bob Stopkins here for another Learning Carton micro-minute. Today, what is Whiff ‘em?

Person TBD
WIIFM, is an acronym that means What’s In It For Me? In the training and development world, people immediately wonder: Is this learning experience worth my time? What will I get out of it? Will it help my career? Do I have to do it?

CHRIS
Do you list objectives at the beginning? Or do you tell them, This is what you will get out of this?

This is a bare minimum WIIFM. If it’s all you can do, then please keep on telling them what’s in it for them, but…

BOO
(laughing) You said butt!

CHRIS
(SMILE) But, the WIIFM should be in the description of the exercise.

Once you send your learners into the designed learning experience, show them the WIIFM.

Show them how the knowledge will improve their skills

Show them how the new skill will enhance their ability to do their job.

WIIFM should be established immediately before or right upon entering the learning experience

This goes for if you’re making a 15-second microlearning or if you’re doing a day-long CEU module.

Answer the WIIFM

Your learners will be wondering.

Answer the call!

Comment down below and tell me how you answer the WIIFM call for your learners.

And until next time… (beatbox)

Peace!
