The 70-20-10 Model suggests that we learn the most from projects and in-person work experiences and only 10% of what we learn is from actual training! So, dive in with me and Uncle Wiki and explore why it’s important to think of training as part of your learning solutions. Training is not over when people start a job, it is just the beginning of their learning!

Hi! I’m Chris Karel from the Learning Carton! I’m on a mission to help YOU make better learning videos. And I’m here to help you use those videos to create better learning experiences.

What is the 70-20-10 Model of Learning and Development?

UNCLE WIKI
The 70:20:10 Model for Learning and Development suggests a proportional breakdown of how people learn effectively.

It is based on a survey where respondents were asked to self-report how they believe they learned. They reported the following influences on learning:

70% from challenging assignments
20% from developmental relationships
10% from coursework and training

Thanks, Uncle Wiki

If training and coursework only have a 10% influence on learning, then we need better training solutions.

In fact, I’d like to call them learning solutions.

For example, if we can design courses along with microlearning that promotes remembering, and recurring checklists to support those two strategies with a dynamic knowledge base where people can ask questions and use video to communicate.

Well, then we’re beyond a 10% influence at that point.

We are now solving people’s learning problems as they arise, instead of offering them a one-and-done training solution.

So you tell me, how do you use the 70:20:10 model?

And until next time,

Peace.
