We stop talking about it as training. We can improve training by asking how we can improve learning.

What does it take to improve training?

I say we stop that question right where it’s at and we say, how do we improve learning in the workplace?

See, I think most people learn by being curious and asking a question about what they need to know in order to be able to do something.

And they probably start by Googling or asking somebody near them if they’re in a workplace or texting or messaging somebody that’s an expert.

So why don’t we do that at work?

Why don’t we design experiences that allow our employees to learn like that?

Why not create a learning community?

Why not use Teams or Slack as a place to go get answers from the experts?

Why not create short videos that explain different topics?

That allows somebody to go to a catalog of that information and easily find it, watch it and consume it and say, Aha, now I know how to do that.

So how do we fix training?

We should start thinking about it as learning.

That’s how we improve it.
