What’s trendy or “hawt” depends on what you do in the Learning and Development space. This is not a highly vetted list! Based on a quick recall conversation with several instructional designers and the video bias of the author, we, or shall I say I, have arrived at five Hawt Topix in eLearning. Microlearning is hawt because it’s all about small, bite-sized chunks of training or instruction that are less than 10 minutes in length. Some call them knowledge nuggets! People forget 90% of what they learn. Microlearning helps you remember.

Mobile learning

Mobile is a boomer way of saying phone. Mobile learning (also called mLearning) means you are using your celly to learn. A celly is a phone that’s not plugged into a wall, duh!

Mobile learning is hawt right now because most people trying to learn things these days have a mobile phone in their pocket. Since most of us are on a celly, it makes sense for companies and schools to lean into this hawt topic!

Social Media learning

Social media learning is hawt because trainers and teachers are trying to meet people where they are. It allows people to communicate and find information quickly and the reach is global! There is a social aspect to social media, duh!

We know that people learn when they are around other people. You learned how to do most things by watching other people. Social media learning lets you try out ideas, share opinions, and get immediate feedback on things you’d like to learn. So hawt!

VR – Virtual Reality

A super hawt topik in eLearning is VR. We are a Discord channel and Twitch stream away from Ready Player One. Do you have your haptic gloves and self-cleaning chair? If not, maybe VR is too hawt for you! It’s meta confusing!

According to Future Visual, VR training is an immersive learning experience that recreates real life settings and simulates work challenges. It gives employees the chance to gain on-the-job training in a risk-free environment where they can learn by doing.

We are not buying spring clothes here, we are creating learning, and hawt topix in eLearning was a catchy way for this learning-nerd-author to have fun talking about it.
