Quizzes or evaluative quizzes differ from knowledge checks in that no feedback is given after each question. Think of quizzes as tests where the teacher collects the papers and you get a score later. In online learning, your learner takes a quiz to show what they know NOT to learn more about what they don’t know. If you want to test knowledge and offer coaching, use a knowledge check. Quizzes evaluate, knowledge checks inform and instruct.

Evaluative Quizzes – 5 of 12 Learning in the Flow of Work Elements

CHRIS
What is a LITFOW element?

GUEST
Evaluative Quizzes

KC
The answer’s usually C.

CHRIS
Wait up! Quizzes, or evaluative quizzes, measure the effectiveness of your learning experience.

KC
It doesn’t matter. Just go. Swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe…

CHRIS
The recall or application of knowledge allows you to get feedback on the effectiveness of your learning program.

KC
I could take this as many times as I want.

CHRIS
The quiz offers a question, the user enters an answer, and then they receive a score. No feedback is given along the way to coach them to the proper answer.

KC
Huh. It told me the answer. I get to take it again. Hah. I got it right. Haha.

CHRIS
If you want your quizzes to measure understanding, then you need to give your learner’s one chance to take it. Master is 80% or greater.

BOO:
That’s 8 out of 10!

CHRIS
Hmmm

BOO
Or 4 out of 5.

CHRIS:
Hmmm. One more thing: knowledge checks which may look like quizzes are different in that they offer coaching feedback on the incorrect answers. Knowledge checks literally check in on the knowledge of the learner during a learning experience.

A quiz evaluates whether they understand the information.

BOO
Oooh! He did a mic drop!

CHRIS:
Haha. Wait, for real, do you know the difference between knowledge checks and quizzes?
Which ones do you think are more effective?

Comment down below, and until next time.

Peace!
